The smallest hotel in the world, El Hotelito de Punta Grande, located on the picturesque island of El Hierro in the municipality of La Frontera, will sadly be bidding farewell to its guests in January. The owners have made the difficult decision to permanently close its doors, and the last guests will check out on the 20th of that month.

This tiny hotel, dating back to 1830, holds a special place in history and was even designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2019. However, despite its significance, the owners cite the impracticality of sustaining a high-quality tourist establishment on the island as the reason behind its closure.

Situated on the Punta Grande pier, which took shape when a lava flow met the majestic Atlantic Ocean, the hotel covers a mere 40 square meters. In 1975, the building underwent a renovation that transformed it into a charming hotel boasting only four rooms, all offering direct and breathtaking views of the vast ocean, its construction done entirely with lava stones.

Over the years, the hotel has gained recognition worldwide, earning a place in the World Guinness Records in 1984 as the smallest hotel on the planet. The Ministry of Tourism also honored its excellence by awarding the Punta Grande hotel restaurant a bronze plate in the same year. The accolades did not stop there, as the Canary Government granted the hotel the prestigious silver medal of “Importance for Tourism” in 1991.

Focusing on providing an unforgettable experience for their guests, the hotel boasts a small reception, a cozy bar, a delightful restaurant, and a terrace with unmatched views. What sets them apart is their commitment to offering a unique escape by shunning modern distractions, proudly offering:

  • No TV in the rooms
  • No noisy water sports
  • No swimming pool
  • No air conditioning
  • No mini-market on the premises
